What If Your Procrastination Is Trying to Tell You Something?

Your next breakthrough might be waiting just beyond the thing you’ve been avoiding.

I’ve been trying to finish this blog since last week.

Every time I sat down to write it, my brain suddenly decided there were far more important things to do. The garden needed me. The kitchen definitely needed cleaning (apparently). Then there was another coffee to make… and somehow checking the bird feeder felt incredibly urgent!

So here I am, determined that today is the day.

The funny thing is… today it all feels possible.

That got me thinking.

Sometimes what looks like procrastination is actually processing

For years I carried a lot of shame about not getting things done. I labelled myself as lazy. Or perhaps I learnt that label from other people. Either way, procrastination felt like a character flaw.

Then a friend said something that completely changed my perspective.

“What if you’re not being lazy? What if you’re preserving your energy for when you really need it?”

Now, I’m not suggesting we all abandon deadlines and wait for inspiration to strike! But it did make me wonder…

What if procrastination isn't always the enemy we've made it out to be?

“I’ll Do It Tomorrow…”

Most of us have said those words.

  • The email sits unanswered.
  • The project waits.
  • The phone call gets pushed back.
  • The form stays half completed.

We call it procrastination, and it gets a pretty bad reputation.

But what if procrastination isn’t actually the problem?

What if it’s simply information? A clue –  An invitation to understand ourselves a little better.

It's Not About Time

Here’s something that surprised me.

Research suggests procrastination isn’t primarily a time-management problem. It’s an emotion-management problem.

In other words, it isn’t usually because we’re bad at organising our day.

It’s because of how we feel about the task.

We’ve all been told that procrastinators just need better planners, colour-coded diaries or another notebook.

Trust me… I’ve owned enough notebooks to open a stationery shop!

The problem wasn’t the planner.

The problem was what the task represented.

Often, our unconscious mind is simply trying to protect us from uncomfortable feelings we may not even realise we’re having.

Maybe it’s…

  • Fear of success.
  • Fear of judgement.
  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Perfectionism.
  • Self-doubt.

Whatever it is, we learn to distract ourselves.

Not because we’ve consciously decided to, but because suddenly cleaning the fridge seems far less emotionally risky than sending that email.

Sound familiar?

"Action creates confidence. Confidence rarely arrives first."

Could Procrastination Be a Superpower?

Stay with me…

Over the years I’ve realised that not everything has to happen immediately.

Some of my best ideas, biggest breakthroughs and most important decisions arrived when I stopped forcing them.

I think there’s a huge difference between putting things off and the timing not being right.

You see sometimes resistance is fear trying to keep us safe.

And sometimes resistance is wisdom telling us we’re not quite ready.

The trick is learning the difference.

I’ve learnt to trust that many things happen at exactly the right time-not because I sit around waiting, but because I acknowledge the fear, give myself permission to think, and then keep moving forward… even if it’s only one small step at a time.

Here’s the catch.

If waiting becomes avoidance, avoidance becomes a habit.

Every time we completely avoid something important, we quietly reinforce the message:

“I can’t handle this.”

And have you noticed what happens next?

  • The conversation becomes terrifying.
  • The presentation becomes impossible.
  • The life change feels enormous.
  • The mountain gets bigger… even though we haven’t moved an inch.

Resistance Is Sneaky

I’ve noticed that whenever I’m about to do something meaningful, resistance turns up.

It whispers…

  • “Do it later.”
  • “You’re not ready.”
  • “You need more information.”
  • “Wait until you feel confident.”

The problem is confidence rarely comes first.

Action comes first.

Confidence usually catches up afterwards.

When I look back at the things I’m most proud of, I wasn’t really ready for any of them.

I just took the next step anyway.

Your Brain Is Only Trying to Help

Our brains love certainty.

Anything unfamiliar feels uncertain. – Anything uncertain feels uncomfortable.

So your brain kindly suggests…

“Let’s watch a few YouTube videos first.”

Or…

“Maybe just reorganise that kitchen drawer before you start.”

It genuinely thinks it’s helping.

The trouble is, our dreams rarely grow inside our comfort zone.

A Better Question

Instead of asking…

“Why am I so lazy?”

Try asking…

“What am I feeling that I don’t want to feel?”

That one question changes everything.

Because underneath procrastination there’s usually something worth listening to.

The Magic Is Just Beyond the Resistance

One thing I’ve noticed again and again is this…

The moment I finally do the thing I’ve been avoiding, I almost always think…

“Why on earth did I wait so long?”

It was never as awful as I’d imagined.

Sometimes I even enjoy it!

Every time I move through that resistance, I build something much more valuable than productivity.

I build trust in myself.

Not trust that life will always be easy.

Trust that whatever comes, I can handle it.

"The hardest part is often taking the first step when you can't see the whole path."

A Gentle Challenge

So here’s my question for you.

What’s one thing you’ve been putting off?

Not the huge, life-changing thing.

Just one thing.

  • One email.
  • One conversation.
  • One decision.
  • One tiny first step.

What would happen if you did just that today?

Not because you should.

Not because you need to be more productive.

But because your future self might quietly say…

“Thank you.”

Perhaps the goal isn’t to stop procrastinating altogether.

Perhaps it’s learning when to pause, when to trust your timing, and when to gently push through the resistance that’s standing between you and the life you’re trying to create.

And if you find yourself halfway through this blog before suddenly deciding the kitchen needs cleaning…

…I’ll know exactly how you feel.
